Binghamton University Art Museum to host 24-hour drawing marathon
BINGHAMTON, NY—The 2nd Annual Drawing Marathon at the Binghamton University Art Museum will take place from 10 a.m. Friday, March 10 to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 11. The event is free and open to the public (18 and over).
The 24-hour marathon will require 10 selected artists to complete a finished figure drawing in the time allotted. Artists will draw with charcoal on large sheets of prepared paper (provided by the organizers) from a live model who will pose for the entirety of the marathon. Short breaks will be given, but artists will be at work for the run of the marathon. Visitors may observe the artists throughout the 24-hour period. The drawings will remain on view in the museum through Wednesday, March 15.
Two cash prizes will be awarded on the morning of Saturday, March 11: the jury prize of $500 and the people’s prize of $250. The people’s prize will be awarded on the basis of comments posted on the Binghamton University Art Museum Facebook page or in a comment box at the museum. The jury prize will be awarded by the jurors: Ann Welles, director of Exhibit A gallery of Corning, N.Y.; Diane Butler, director of the Binghamton University Art Museum; and Blazo Kovacevic, assistant professor of art and design at Binghamton University.
“The Drawing Marathon offers Binghamton University students, alumni and artists from the Binghamton area and beyond a unique opportunity to discover their artistic second wind, when powerful creative energy is released at the very time physical energy diminishes,” said Butler. “This second wind reinvigorates both mind and body, and can result in rewarding—even spectacular—artistic creations.”
A new component has been added to this year’s marathon. Ten junior artists, ages 8-12, will participate in a Kid’s Sprint, taking place from 5:45-6:45 p.m. Friday. Drawing the same live model, but on smaller paper and for only one hour, kids will compete to produce the most accomplished drawing. Jackie Hogan, assistant director of the Binghamton University Art Museum, will serve as juror for the Kid’s Sprint. The winner will receive a hardcover sketchbook and tuition for a 10-week session at KAPOW Art School’s ‘Art Club for Kids.’ The winner’s drawing will also be shown publicly from 6-9 p.m. First Friday, April 7, at the KAPOW Art Studio, Binghamton.
