2023 was a huge year for Binghamton University. Between moving up in the rankings, commemorating the Class of 2023, and uncovering new research breakthroughs, we have much to celebrate.

And it’s clear that you wanted to celebrate with us! Of all the stories published this year in BingUNews, the ones that got the most attention were stories of accomplishment and achievement. Here are the 10 most popular stories from Binghamton University in 2023:

1. Binghamton moves up in the rankings

2023 was a major year for Binghamton accolades. We achieved our highest rank ever on the U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” list and were named the leading SUNY school by Forbes and The Wall Street Journal. Our schools and colleges were also recognized – the School of Management was ranked a top 10 public business school by Poets & Quants, a leading publication for business education news, for the second consecutive year.

2. Official Rockefeller Center Christmas tree donated by Binghamton professor

Jackie McGinley, an assistant professor in the Department of Social Work, and her family donated the 80-foot tall, 43-foot wide, and 12-ton Norway Spruce in her side yard to be this year’s official Rockefeller Center Christmas tree! In this behind-the-scenes story, McGinley reflected on her family’s decision to donate the tree.

3. Binghamton researchers get FDA approval for drug to treat world’s most common neuromuscular genetic disease

A new drug developed by faculty in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences received FDA approval for the treatment of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a common genetic disease that primarily affects young boys.

5. Binghamton grad drives iconic Oscar Mayer Frankmobile around United States as a ‘Frankfurter’

6. Binghamton University welcomes 18,600 new and returning students

Binghamton kicked off the school year in a big way this fall! We received 58,400 applications in 2023, eclipsing last year’s record of 50,100.

7. Newly endowed $25 million undergraduate and $12.5 million graduate student scholarship programs begin fall semester 2023

Several Binghamton students can benefit from newly established scholarships thanks to a generous anonymous family. “Investing in these scholarships equates to investing in students,” said University President Harvey Stenger during the announcement.

8. Binghamton researchers among top 2% in the world

More than 30 Binghamton University researchers were honored for their work in a study that looked at the impact of scientists worldwide.
