Edwin Torres receives Binghamton University Alumni Association Medal
DSON alumnus and PhD candidate earns award for distinguished service
Congratulations to Decker School of Nursing alumnus and PhD candidate Edwin Torres ’10, MS ’14, who was awarded a Binghamton University Alumni Association Medal of Distinguished Service at the association’s Special Recognition Awards Ceremony held March 30 at the Edison Ballroom in New York City.
Torres emigrated to the United States at age 13 without a basic knowledge of English and attended a New York City high school with a low graduation rate. However, his hard work and perseverance paid off and today he is a nurse practitioner in the Division of Endocrinology at Montefiore Health System in New York City. He is completing his PhD on job insecurity and incidence of diabetes, and complications of diabetes, at the Decker School.
Throughout his academic career at Binghamton, Torres mentored and continues to mentor countless students struggling with some of the same challenges he faced. He also plays an active role in the Latino community in Washington Heights and the Bronx by advocating for better living conditions for vulnerable populations.
The Alumni Association Medal of Distinguished Service recognizes alumni contributions to specific areas on campus. It is presented to alumni who have been tireless volunteers to the University, while also excelling in their respective career endeavors.
