Celebrating a decade of discovery
EOP Students Shine in Binghamton’s First-Year Research Immersion Program
This year marked the 10th anniversary of Binghamton University’s First-Year Research Immersion (FRI) program, a groundbreaking initiative that introduces first-year students to hands-on research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Designed to foster critical thinking, innovation and collaboration, FRI offers students the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors.
While Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students have been involved from the program’s inception, this year saw a record number of EOP participants, making it the most diverse cohort in FRI’s decade-long history. These students have excelled academically and brought unique perspectives to their research teams, demonstrating the profound impact of inclusivity in scientific inquiry.
Transformative Research Experiences
EOP participants are tackling innovative research projects ranging from environmental sustainability to advancements in health technologies. Their success exemplifies the core values of EOP: access, opportunity and excellence. The inclusion of EOP students has enriched the FRI program, instilling confidence and skills while fostering a sense of belonging within the larger cohort.
Collaborative Leadership
The strong collaboration between EOP and FRI leadership has been pivotal in connecting students to these opportunities. Efforts by Megan Fegley, director of the FRI program, and EOP Senior Associate Director and Senior EOP Counselor Yulanda Whyte Johnson, have played a significant role. During EOP orientations prior to the Binghamton Enrichment Program (BEP), students and their families are introduced to FRI, inspiring them to see themselves as future researchers.
Fegley’s involvement extends beyond recruitment. During BEP’s summer program, she actively participates in luncheons, connects students with faculty research advisors and current FRI participants and provides lab tours that give students an inside look into research streams and facilities. These initiatives spark curiosity and set a strong foundation for students’ engagement in research.
Measurable Success
FRI’s outcomes speak volumes about its impact. This year, the number of EOP students participating in FRI reached its highest level. Retention rates and the completion of the three-semester sequence have also set new records. These achievements highlight the effectiveness of an inclusive approach to research education, ensuring that EOP students thrive academically and professionally.
December’s First-year Research Immersion Poster Session was a lively event with students disseminating scientific information in Old Union Hall, Mandela Room and UU-120. The experience validated the hard work our students put into their team research.
Undergraduate research has the transformative potential to empower students to dream big and make a difference. The partnership between EOP and FRI has fundamentally reshaped research opportunities for underrepresented students, creating pathways to success and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.
We are proud of the trailblazing EOP scholars who continue to shape the future of STEM fields and look forward to sharing more inspiring stories in upcoming newsletters!
