Binghamton University’s PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholars to update Housing Authority
BINGHAMTON, NY - Participants in Binghamton University’s School of Management (SOM) student honors program, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Scholars, will renovate the outdoor courtyard of the Binghamton Housing Authority on 35 Exchange St., Binghamton from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 21.
Representatives and residents from the Housing Authority, University students and alumni, and community members will work to provide the finishing touches to unveil the new courtyard and social areas – which includes installing new furniture, repainting and refurbishing existing furniture, adding an outdoor pavilion, planting flowers and other shrubbery, installing a tile mosaic and creating a mural inside the community room. Elaine Miller ’83, director of the Housing Authority, will also talk about the PwC Scholars’ year-long service projects to support the organization and community.
In addition to the Housing Authority’s new renovations, the PwC Scholars worked throughout the year to raise all funds needed to update the courtyard and family areas. In total, almost $15,000 was raised and will be used for the improvements. The PwC Scholars also stocked and organized hundreds of books in the Housing Authority’s library last fall; added additional reading corners and social-gathering places across the complex; and planned outreach events like game and entertainment nights for residents.
The mission of the Housing Authority is to provide safe and affordable housing, with the ultimate goal of raising the standard of living for city residents and families. Each year, the PwC Scholars identify a local initiative to engage in community service/fundraising as a way to give back to their community, and foster stronger ties with the city of Binghamton. A portion of the books for the Housing Authority library was donated by the Binghamton University Libraries.
