Binghamton University’s B-First committee hosted its Fourth Annual First-Gen Graduation Celebration and Cording Ceremony on May 9 in the Mandela Room and Old Union Hall — a festive and inspiring event dedicated to honoring the graduating class of first-generation students.

The atmosphere was both celebratory and reflective, as first-generation students—surrounded by staff, faculty, friends and mentors—received cords symbolizing the unique challenges they have overcome and the bonds they share with the Binghamton community. The cords, representing both academic achievement and personal resilience, were presented amid speeches and personal testimonials that highlighted the significance of the first-generation experience. More than 500 graduates received cords signifying their first-generation status at Commencement ceremonies, though many more than that crossed the stage this May.

As the graduates donned their cords, the event resonated as both a celebration of individual achievement and a collective commitment to ensuring that every first-generation student thrives at Binghamton University. The cording ceremony reaffirmed that these students are not alone in their journey; they are part of a vibrant, supportive network that champions success and purposeful change.
