Binghamton University to hold annual Alumni Global Day of Service

BINGHAMTON, NY — Binghamton University will hold its third annual Alumni Global Day of Service during the weekend of Friday-Sunday, April 28-30. Across the world, Binghamton alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends will take part in community service projects—including right here in Binghamton—to demonstrate the strength of the University’s alumni network and the collective power of volunteerism.

Service projects in the area include:

Project: Welcoming the Warm Weather

Site Leader: Patricia Alikakos ’04

Location: Mom’s House, 770 Harry L Dr., Johnson City

Date: 10 a.m.-noon Friday, April 28

Description: Volunteers are holding an outdoor clean-up day to prepare for the warmer weather.

Project: Town of Maine Road Cleanup with the I Run For… Half Marathon Organization

Site Leader: Matthew Yudin ’15

Location: Town of Maine Park, 2693 NYS Route 26, Maine

Date: 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 29 (rain date is Sunday, April 30)

Description: Volunteers will support the efforts of the I Run For… Half Marathon Organization and the town to create a cleaner, greener Maine by cleaning up litter on Route 26 and Nanticoke Road.

Project: Spring Cleaning at the Zoo

Site Leader: Kelli Krieger, MAT ’02, MA ‘03

Location: Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, 185 Park Ave., Binghamton

Date: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 29

Description: Volunteers will do some spring cleaning at America’s fifth oldest zoo.

Project: Boys and Girls Club

Site Leader: Tom Mastro ’16

Location: The Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome, Clubhouse Rd, Endicott

Date: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 29

Description: Volunteers will engage in a variety of tasks including refreshing landscaping, painting, equipment organization and building, playground refreshing and possibly development of the nature walk.

Project: Broome County Humane Society

Site Leaders: Elise Thornley ‘12 and Kaitlin Maynard ‘12

Location: The Broome County Humane Society, 2 Jackson St., Binghamton

Date: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, April 29

Description: Volunteers will assist with spring clean-up and packing to facilitate relocation to the organization’s new building.

Project: Cleaning the Haunt!

Site Leaders: Ashley AuPont ’13, MPA ’16, MSW ’16; and Emily Tier ‘11, MSW ‘16

Location: Southern Tier Independence Center, 135 E. Frederick St., Binghamton

Date: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 29

Description: Volunteers will help the organization with cleanup and demolition of a building used in past years for games and a haunted house.

Project: Demolition and Construction at the Binghamton Rescue Mission

Site Leader: Kyle Nedlik ’14

Location: Binghamton Rescue Mission, 56-58 Whitney Ave., Binghamton

Date: 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29

Description: Volunteers will help with various demolition and drywalling of the Binghamton Rescue Mission’s newly purchased property, which lies adjacent to its current facility. The new property is intended to help women experiencing the same challenges once it’s functional. A spring cleanup of the facility grounds may also take place.

Project: Harry L. Johnson Monument Restoration

Site Leader: Dai Korba ’12, MPA ‘16

Location: 115 Main St., Johnson City

Date: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday April 29 (rain date is Sunday, April 30)

Description: Volunteers will clean the Harry L. Johnson monument located in the small park adjacent to Your Home Public Library.
