Binghamton University to host fourth annual 5K in memory of Gregg Wenzel ’91

Wenzel was a triathlete and former student-athlete at Binghamton who competed on the men’s varsity swimming and diving team.

Binghamton University will host the fifth annual Wenzel Memorial 5K in honor of Gregg Wenzel ‘91 at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. The event, which is part of 2025 Homecoming festivities, will consist of a 5K run/walk on and around campus. It is open to all students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community.

Wenzel was a triathlete and former student-athlete at Binghamton who competed on the men’s varsity swimming and diving team. He was killed in a car accident in July 2003 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he was working as a CIA directorate of operations.

Race check-in and on-site registration will take place in front of the West Gym at the Gregg Wenzel Memorial Statue on Bearcat Blvd. The first 50 finishers will receive a participation medal. Results will be posted after the event.

Online registration will end on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2025. Day of race registration will start at 7:45 a.m. and end at 8:50 a.m. The race will begin at 9 a.m.

Individual participant race fees are $10 for students and $20 for all others. The fee includes the race and post-race refreshments. Entrants must be 13 years or older. To register for the race, go to https://runsignup.com/Race/NY/Vestal/WenzelMemorial5K
