Binghamton’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program achieves CAPTE accreditation
Recognition underscores commitment to academic excellence and community impact
Binghamton University's Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), marking a major milestone for the University. Accreditation highlights the program’s dedication to maintaining high standards in curriculum, faculty, facilities, and student outcomes.
“Earning CAPTE accreditation is a major achievement for our program, and provides external validation of our academic excellence,” said Assistant Professor and Founding Director of the Division of Physical Therapy, Michael Buck, PT, PhD, ATC, Cert MDT, CSCS. “It reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff, and students, and reinforces Binghamton’s mission to provide outstanding physical therapy education that prepares future clinicians to improve individuals’ physical function, mobility, and health in their communities.”
Launched in 2023 at Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the DPT program is a full-time, three-year course of study. The program includes classroom instruction, laboratory work, practical experience, and clinical training. Students complete 32 weeks of clinical education and more than 500 hours of on-campus instruction. After completing the DPT program, graduates are eligible to take the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE).
“Our Doctor of Physical Therapy program plays a vital role in fulfilling Decker College’s mission to serve the needs of rural and vulnerable populations, equipping future healthcare professionals to make a meaningful difference in underserved communities,” said Dean Mario R. Ortiz, PhD, RN, PHCNS-BC, FNP-C, FNAP, FAAN. “I am extremely proud of Mike and the entire faculty and staff of the Division of Physical Therapy for creating an excellent program and guiding it to accreditation.”
Decker’s DPT program graduated its first cohort of 35 students in May 2026. The second and third cohorts are underway, and a fourth cohort just began this spring.
