Binghamton University to inaugurate Anne D’Alleva as eighth president, celebrate 80 years of excellence

Education is the pathway toward opportunity, a ticket to success and fulfillment.

That vision has helped guide 80 years of growth at Binghamton University, and it’s one President Anne D’Alleva intends to continue building upon in the years to come. D’Alleva will be inaugurated as Binghamton’s eighth president Oct. 2 during a formal investiture ceremony, the centerpiece of eight special events planned from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 that lead up to Homecoming weekend and recognize the University’s past, present, and future.

As part of inauguration week, Binghamton University will showcase the scope of its offerings, from music and the arts to undergraduate research and efforts to address the future of quantum science. D’Alleva began her duties as president in November 2025 and almost immediately began developing the five-year strategic plan, which was launched in August, and focuses on expanding the University’s impact, deepening partnerships and advancing its standing among the world’s leading universities. D’Alleva described this celebration as one that the entire campus community deserves. 

“I am so excited to welcome the entire Binghamton University community to join this celebration, which also marks the 80^th anniversary of this great institution. We have so many great events planned to highlight our journey and the promise of where we can go next,” D’Alleva said. “Binghamton University began with a generation shaped by sacrifice and united by the belief that education could change the course of any person’s life. What emerged was more than a culture. It was an unmistakable bond, and it was theirs. Yet even as the University’s reach has expanded, the Binghamton bond has remained as strong as ever.”

Music Department concert 

Sept. 30, 7:30 p.m., Anderson Center Osterhout Theater

The performance will feature a collection of works celebrating the University's 80th anniversary. It will highlight the talent and dedication of student musicians from across the University. 

From Tradition to Tomorrow: 80th anniversary office decorating contest

Oct. 1, all day

Faculty and staff are invited to decorate their offices to showcase their favorite moments from Binghamton University's past 80 years or their vision for the next 80 years.

Binghamton University’s 80th anniversary celebration

Oct. 1, 11 a.m. to noon, Peace Quad, Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, University Downtown Center (UDC)

President D’Alleva will cut a commemorative cake on the Peace Quad, while cupcakes will be served at the Health Sciences Building and the UDC. 

Quantum science panel

Oct. 1, 3 to 4 p.m., Room 2008, Engineering and Science Building

What is quantum science? Why should you care? What is Binghamton's role in the future of quantum science? Faculty experts participate in a discussion moderated by Vice President for Research Sheena Murphy. 

Innovative Technologies Complex 20th anniversary reception and undergraduate poster session

Oct. 1, 4 to 5 p.m., Rotunda of the Engineering and Science Building at Innovative Technologies Complex (ITC) 

Undergraduate student research at Binghamton will be shown during a special poster session coordinated by the External Scholarships and Undergraduate Research Center. President D’Alleva will also join to celebrate 20 years of research, learning, and advancement at the ITC.

Getting to Know President D'Alleva: Q&A with Binghamton's eighth president  

Oct. 1, 7 to 8 p.m., Anderson Center Chamber Hall

Veteran local journalist and news anchor Candace Chapman will moderate a question-and-answer chat with President D'Alleva, who will share stories from her life and career, as well as insights and perceptions of her time at Binghamton so far.

Oct. 2, 11 a.m., Anderson Center Osterhout Theater

The Binghamton University community hosts the investiture of Anne D’Alleva at a distinguished ceremony to formally welcome and celebrate the University’s eighth president. 

College planning workshop

Oct. 3, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Lecture Hall

The Binghamton University Admissions Office and President D'Alleva will host a college-planning workshop for local high school students and their families, featuring a series of informative sessions to help participants navigate the college admissions process. Topics will include financial aid, building a college list, and writing the college essay, with practical guidance from experienced campus professionals. 

“Working with so many other departments on campus is what makes creating an event like this so special,” said Director of Commencement and Special Events Sarah LoPiccolo. “I have thoroughly enjoyed diving into the University's 80 years of history throughout this process to incorporate various historical aspects of our past, present, and future into the inauguration events.”
