Lubna Omar, an instructor of anthropology at Binghamton University, has been named to the fourth cohort of the State University of New York (SUNY) Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice (DEISJ) Fellowship.

A central aim of Omar’s role as a fellow is to serve as an accessible resource for her academic community. She invites faculty members across campus to reach out to discuss inclusive teaching strategies, exchange perspectives, or explore ways to support social justice concepts in higher education.

“It feels like an opportunity and, at the same time, a responsibility to make real practical changes in the way we teach,” reflected Omar. “It’s validating to see that there’s institutional backing to help faculty in the SUNY system build safe, inclusive spaces where every student feels heard, seen, and respected.”

Omar is one of nine educators selected statewide for this cohort across SUNY’s 64 campuses. Throughout the academic year, fellows develop educational projects, host workshops, and provide peer consultations to strengthen inclusive course design across the system.

Ultimately, Omar emphasizes that the core purpose of this initiative is to enrich the student experience.

“We want them to walk away from Binghamton with the confidence and critical thinking skills to engage thoughtfully with complex, real-world issues and challenges,” she reflected.
