Joe Miceli has been named the 2016-17 America East Man of the Year.

It is the first time that a Binghamton athlete has earned the honor.

The America East Man and Women of the Year Awards are presented annually to graduating male and female senior student-athletes who has best distinguished him or herself throughout their collegiate career in academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.

Miceli capped his career with a 19th place finish in the pole vault at the NCAA East Regional Meet. On May 7 he was named the Men’s Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the America East Outdoor Championships for the second consecutive year.

He captured four America East individual titles and qualified for the NCAA East Regional Meet three times. He was named all-conference six times.

In the classroom, he was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) Academic All-District Team and is a three-time America East All-Academic selection.

He was inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society in April 2014 and was presented with the America East Elite 18 Award following the 2016 conference indoor meet. He is a two-time United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) Scholar-Athlete.

Miceli volunteered with several medical and youth organizations in the Southern Tier during his time at Binghamton University.

“We are very happy for Joe,” Binghamton Athletic Director Patrick Elliott said. “He has represented Binghamton well in every way during his career. Joe has a bright future ahead of him and we wish him the best.”

“My time as a student-athlete at Binghamton and in the America East has been absolutely amazing,” Miceli said. “I have had so many great memories during my career and its an honor to receive this award.”

Miceli is the second Binghamton finalist for the award. Viive Rebane was the runner up for the 2011-12 America East Woman of the Year.

Also on June 2, men’s basketball player John Rinaldi and softball player Carrie Maniccia were named to the America East’s Helping Hands Team for their work in the community.
