$1 million gift to help provide 50 students with full-ride scholarships to Binghamton University

Binghamton only SUNY school chosen for new program in NY

BINGHAMTON, NY - Give Something Back is partnering with Binghamton University to support 50 Pell Grant-eligible students in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree to graduate in four years with little or no debt.

Give Back founder and Chair Robert Carr presented a check for $1 million to University leaders at a press conference held at Monday, Oct. 23, in the Benet Alumni Lounge of the Alumni Center, in Old O’Connor Hall, on campus.

More than a scholarship program, Give Back recruits high-need students in ninth grade and provides mentoring and skills development throughout high school to prepare them for the academic rigors of a college education. The program focuses on supporting high-achieving scholars with a special outreach to those who have experienced foster care or the incarceration of a parent.

Binghamton University has been selected as one of only three universities for the New York state program launch. Binghamton University is one of 26 institutions of higher education across the country to partner with Give Back, first started by Carr in 2003.

“Give Something Back is thrilled to partner with Binghamton University to realize our vision of making a four-year college education available to qualified students of modest means in New York state,” said Carr. “Binghamton University consistently ranks as a top school in the nation and in New York, and is recognized for its commitment to providing the academic and social support necessary for students to thrive and succeed in college.”

“The Binghamton University community is extremely excited about being the recipient of Give Something Back’s generous gift,” said Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger. “We look forward to welcoming the students who will receive this support, and the amazing things that they will accomplish while attending Binghamton University.”

Give Back helps students who may not have considered college an achievable option to get the guidance and financial support they need to complete a college degree in four years with little or no debt. The program pairs mentoring with college-readiness programming throughout the scholars’ four years of high school and then provides a scholarship that covers the cost of tuition, standard fees, room and board.

High school student and mentor recruitment will begin this year, with enrollment of the first cohort at Binghamton University expected in 2021.
