Binghamton University Art Museum to open winter exhibitions with ‘Beautiful Pictures: Peter Guttman ’76’

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton University Art Museum will open its winter exhibitions with Beautiful Pictures: Peter Guttman ‘76, an exhibition of photographs by alumnus Peter Guttman, on Thursday, Jan. 25, in room 213 of the Fine Arts Building, on campus. Guttman will give a gallery talk at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow from 5-7 p.m.

To close the exhibition, the museum will host the music department’s mid-day concert — a performance of original compositions, written by students of Professor Daniel Thomas Davis, and inspired by works on view — at 1:20 p.m. Thursday, March 1.

Guttman is known internationally for his work as a photographer, lecturer, and travel journalist who has authored eight books and ventured to seven continents and over 230 countries. His many accolades include the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Exploration and Storytelling, the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalist of the Year Award (three times), a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Travel Writers Society and a George Eastman Power of the Image Award. Guttman has also been recognized with solo exhibitions at Sotheby’s and the United Nations. In 2012, his bestselling travel app, Beautiful Planet HD, was named by NBC News as one of “eight outstanding educational apps” and will be projected in the main gallery for visitors to explore.

The lower galleries will feature a focus exhibition curated by students, Peter Guttman: Collection as a Self Portrait, that explores how Guttman’s collections wed his world travels with a sense of self.

This exhibition was made possible through the assistance of Danielle Albertz and Marc Lovci of Duggal Visual Solutions, NYC. Special thanks also goes to Brigitte Saint-Ouen of Gallery 32 Fine Arts, NYC.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, visit binghamton.edu/art-museum.
