Top 10 tips for a successful mentoring experience
- Be prepared. Be sure to research the alumnus/a you are connected with, as well as their organization. Attend each meeting with a list of questions.
- Be considerate. Be prompt. Do not keep your mentor waiting. Respond to messages in a timely manner, and do not cancel a meeting at the last minute.
- Initiate conversation. Understand what you want from the mentoring relationship and communicate your goals and aspirations to your mentor.
- Target your questions for the best response. Don’t ask vague questions such as, “What field should I go into?” Instead, come with specific ideas and share your interests. Research informational interviewing questions if you’re unsure what to ask.
- Be realistic. Look at the time you have with your mentor, and prioritize the topics you most want to cover. Don’t ask for advice on everything, have purpose in each request. Be realistic in your time as well. Do not commit yourself to obligations you cannot keep.
- Have open communication. Help the alumnus/a understand what you’re looking for with this relationship. Also be open and honest about your challenges and weaknesses.
- Be open to new ideas. This program gives you the opportunity to grow professionally and personally.
- Be respectful of feedback. You may choose not to follow the feedback provided, but be respectful. Do not blame the mentor if his or her advice does not work out, or he or she is not able to answer all your questions.
- Maintain professional behavior. Take ownership, do not make excuses and be prepared.
- Follow-up. Send a thank-you note after your meeting or facilitated connection has ended.
