Education Abroad

Education Abroad Option

The Office of International Education and Global Initiatives (IEGI) provides excellent education abroad opportunities for Scholars who wish to use their $3,500 award to participate in an education abroad program. You may choose from more than 60 programs in 30 countries through Binghamton University or from hundreds of program options through other SUNY campuses.

Note: For Summer 2022 through Spring 2023, students are no longer limited to SUNY programs.

  • New for Summer 2022 through Spring 2023: To apply for education abroad programs administered by non-SUNY institutions, apply directly through your sponsoring institution or program provider in accordance with directions on their web pages. Program providers must confirm that this is a credit-bearing program, and not simply a travel program. To view a directory of non-SUNY education abroad programs, please click here.
    • Scholars participating in non-SUNY education abroad programs for the spring or fall semester will take a leave of absence from the University.
    • Scholars should meet with an academic advisor to confirm that the credits from the hosting institution will transfer to Binghamton University and ensure that those credits will apply toward your major before committing to the program.
    • Questions regarding financial aid eligibility while participating in a non-SUNY education abroad program should be directed to IEGI@binghamton.edu.  Note: Financial aid can never be applied to winter programs.
    • After you've been accepted and decide to participate, you must also complete a Binghamton general online Non-SUNY Education Abroad application.  There will be additional helpful information for you within this application (such as campus guidelines for participation in non-SUNY study abroad programs, how study abroad credit works, etc.)

  • An eligible Scholar approved for participation in an education abroad program will receive a one-time payment of $3,500 in the form of a check from Binghamton University's Business Office regardless of the amount the student is paying for the education abroad experience.
  • The payment may or may not coincide with your departure date, so be prepared in case payment is not made prior to departure.
  • Note that the payment is not a financial aid award and the payment will not appear on any financial aid documents.
  • Tuition and associated costs as well as any other costs incurred in the pursuit of this activity are the responsibility of the participating student.
  • Students receiving the award, but not successfully completing a minimum of 3 credit hours will be expected to return the award.
