Update May 2020
In early March, the Student Culinary Council (SCC) distributed a survey throughout the residential communities asking students their preference of retail offerings to be included in the renovation of Hinman Dining Hall. More than 2,500 responses were received, with overwhelming support for Asian and Mediterranean cuisine. In meeting with student representatives, it was determined that Binghamton University Dining Services will expand its Asian offerings in the dining hall as well as offer Garbanzo Mediterranean Fresh as the retail concept on the third floor (in addition to Starbucks).
In late March, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an order that all non-essential construction be shut down. At that time, contractors working on all capital projects on campus secured our construction sites and released their crews. Since then, we have been approved to re-open our sites while implementing appropriate social distancing and safety protocols. We are currently working with our contractors to bring available staff back on site and doing our best to minimize delays.
We're excited to announce the university is doing a complete renovation of Hinman Dining Hall and revamp of Cleveland Hall. Work has begun and is expected to be completed in 2020-2021.
The Hinman Dining Hall renovation will include a 26,500 square foot addition on three floors. Plans are in the works for a brand new student lounge and programming space, large window walls across the whole front, multiple dining areas and a rooftop garden/study space.
Here’s what you can look forward to in the new all-inclusive Residential Life Collegiate Center at Hinman:
- brand new dining facility with 9 service platforms and expanded seating area
- Starbucks conveniently located on the dining hall level
- a convenience store located on the ground level
- a student culinary “Makerspace”- a commercial kitchen for student use
- space for RA programs, College Council meetings, and Hinman traditional events
- offices for Hinman student government
- informal study space
- garden terrace/patio
Cleveland Hall will be reconfigured for ADA compliance, all windows will be replaced with more energy efficient ones, elevators will be replaced, rooms will be painted and new lighting will be installed. We're also excited to welcome air conditioning! Find more information on Physical Facilities website.

To make sure our residents get their Starbucks fix, we've brought in a Starbucks food truck! It is parked in the Rockefeller Center loading dock and open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the semester. If you're missing the Subway, it will be relocated to the MarketPlace.
Where will we eat?
Hinman residents (and all our residents) are welcomed to eat at any of our dining centers on campus. Appalachian Dining Center is just a short walk up the hill in back of Hinman. You'll want to make the walk there – the Bearcat Bakery makes fresh cupcakes, cookies and breads. We have a lot of options close by including the MarketPlace, Jazzman's and the Chenango Room. See the map of all our food locations here.
