  • Overview
    Resident Assistants possess strong leadership skills and a commitment to building quality relationships in not only their residential community, but all across the Binghamton University campus. RAs play an integral part in the overall operation of the residence halls. Primarily, the RA is concerned with the growth and development of each individual on their floor and the building community as a whole. Additionally, RAs are continually striving to enhance the quality of life for those residents. This includes planning programs, promoting diversity and inclusion, assisting with personal and professional growth, and, most importantly, enjoying their time at Binghamton University.   • Job Description

    Responsibilities of a Resident Assistant will vary based on the differing needs of each community. RAs are expected to demonstrate skills in flexibility, critical thinking, teamwork, ability to work under pressure, community development skills, time management skills, ability to perform administrative functions, professionalism, self-awareness and ability to take feedback. The RA reports to a Resident Director or Area Coordinator.

    As a student and a member of the Residential Life staff, an RA must have an overall working knowledge of the University so they can appropriately mediate, assist, advise and serve as a liaison between residents and other members of the University community. They must possess good judgment in order to cope with the day-to-day decisions involved in working within their residential area. The RA must be knowledgeable about, enforce, and personally abide by all University rules and regulations. They must also have a personal and professional commitment that goes beyond specific job responsibilities while being committed to personal growth by budgeting or managing personal time for study, work and relaxation.

  • Responsibilities

    Community Development:

    • Develop an individualized relationship with students within an area of responsibility and be familiar with other students within that residence area by utilizing intentional interactions.
    • Organize and implement a variety of activities including educational programs, community builders and passive programming.
    • Assist residents (within the limits of training and capability) with academic, personal and social matters by serving as a link to campus resources and making referrals when appropriate.
    • Encourage the development of a community atmosphere in the residential area in which residents have a concern and respect for the rights and responsibilities of others.
    • Spend a significant amount of time within your assigned building/area actively engaging with residents.
    • Attend and support other area/building activities.

    Staff Member:

    • Establish effective, ongoing communication with your supervisor(s), residents and other staff and resources at the University.
    • Arrive on campus by the specified date/time prior to the opening of the residential area for the fall and spring semesters for the purpose of staff training. Engage in further training throughout the year.
    • Participate in weekly staff meetings, scheduled one-on-ones and other area/building meetings.
    • Participate in staff duty schedule and fulfill duty responsibilities (e.g. office duty, back-up duty, assisting professional staff in crisis situations, etc.).
    • Act as a positive representative of the Residential Life Department in interactions and role model positive behavior on and off campus.
    • Maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude as it relates to the spirit of the RA position.
    • Limit co-curricular activities and other employment to no more than 10 hours a week and limit academic credit hours to no more than 18 credits in order to successfully manage the time commitments of the RA role.

    Administration:

    • Uphold and support the University policies and procedures.
    • Educate residents on and utilize the appropriate procedures regarding maintenance, operations, recycling, etc.
    • Develop and promote an awareness of fire and safety precautions/regulations among the residents; assist with fire alarm evacuation and other safety procedures including completion of monthly fire safety inspections.
    • Assist in the opening and closing of the buildings at the beginning and ending semester, as well as each time the residential areas close for breaks and recess periods.
    • Use and maintain necessary forms and reports, such as hall rosters, online RCRs, incident reports, housing surveys and maintenance reporting procedures, as directed.

    Upon being hired, RAs will receive a more detailed performance program and expectations.

  • Application Requirements
    • Must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA
    • Attend one information session
    • Must be a full-time student to apply and must also be full-time during employment if hired
    • Have lived on campus for at least 1 full semester before assuming the role (first-year students can apply if they currently live on campus)
    • Good Standing in Student Conduct — if you're on an active sanction that concludes by February 7, you may still apply

RA Applications are now CLOSED for the 2020–2021 academic year hiring cycle.

Candidates who have completed their application will be emailed within the first week of November 2019 with information on how to sign up for Group Interviews. Group Interview sign-ups will take place on Friday, November 8, 2019
