Background

Fernando Castro Ortiz was born in Ronda, Spain. He completed his undergraduate Degree in Translation and Interpretation in English and Italian in Spain and also holds a master’s degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and a master’s degree in Hispanic Linguistics. His areas of interest include sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and Spanish for specific purposes. At Binghamton University, he teaches a variety of courses of Spanish language, Hispanic culture, and Hispanic linguistics. He is also an advisor for Spanish majors and minors.

Fernando is the coauthor of the Open Educational Resource (OER) “Salón de clase: Intermediate Spanish for Education Professionals.” This free and open textbook explores the role of Spanish language and Spanish speakers in the U.S. education system using interactive multimedia materials in H5P and interviews with stakeholders in the field of education.

He has been selected as a Community Engaged Teaching Fellow by the BU Center for Civic Engagement for the Academic year 2022-2023.
