Consistent with policies of The State University of New York, Binghamton University participated in the 2021 University-wide Biennial SUNY Uniform Campus Climate Survey. The survey gathered information about student and employee experience with sexual and interpersonal violence and knowledge of policies and resources.
The survey was sent to 17,219 students and 2,815 employees. 2,196 students and 718 employees responded to the survey, for response rates of 12.7 percent and 25.6 percent, respectively.
In the survey 42 percent of female students (517 students), 11percent of male students (74 students), and 56 percent of Gender Non-Binary students (19 students) reported that they were subject to sexual harassment in the prior year. Twenty percent of female students (246 students), nine percent of male students (61 students), and 23 percent of Gender Non-Binary students (8 students) reported that they were subject to sexual assault in the prior year. Eighty-four percent of students indicated familiarity with affirmative consent, 53 percent indicated that they knew how to report, and 30 percent indicated they knew how to find the Title IX Coordinator.
Binghamton University, working with community colleagues (including students, faculty, and staff), will use these data to improve response to violence, develop prevention programs, and will continue to study the issue.
The Climate Survey will be administered again in the Spring Semester of 2023. More information about the Survey is available at https://www.suny.edu/climatesurvey/.
