The Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) at Binghamton University's Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science is expanding further and seeks eight (8) tenure-track faculty:

In addition, the greater Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science also has openings for the following roles, which could also have close association with SSIE depending on candidate background:

Dr. Khasawneh, SSIE Chair and Director of the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE) is also seeking a Research Scientist and a Research Manager to join his group immediately:

All positions immediately above are sought to start in Spring or Fall 2024. The Associate/Full Professor positions are sought to start in Fall 2024. These positions require advanced expertise in their fields. Qualified applicants in other emerging areas of industrial and systems engineering (ISE) and systems science (SS) may be considered.

The Assistant Professor – Energy Systems position will explore recent developments in green energy (wind and solar), zero-emission buildings, green transportation (hydrogen fuel), smart grids, energy storage and management systems (different types of batteries and degradation modeling), battery manufacturing and recycling, and carbon capture and sequestration, energy policy, and other emerging topics in the energy engineering landscape.

The Assistant Professor – Health Systems position will focus on advanced topics in health systems engineering, including but not limited to, the role of Industry 4.0 concepts in healthcare, health systems, and wellness; remote sensing of data; wearable technologies and IoT; hospital at home concepts; hospitals of the future; facial recognition and computer vision; precision/personalized medicine; telemedicine/mobile health; advanced machine learning/artificial intelligence; public health modeling; and many other advanced topics.

The Assistant Professor – Systems Science position will pursue newer topics such as Computational Social Science, Biomedical Complexity, Epidemiology, Complex Systems, Network Science or other emerging topics in the broader discipline of Systems Science. Candidates with experience in the broad area of computational intelligence are preferred.

The Associate Professor – Nanofabrication position will also serve as Director of Watson College's Nanofabrication Laboratory, an educational and research facility that houses equipment for the fabrication of micro- and nano- electromechanical devices. The candidate will be expected to provide faculty leadership in the area of nanofabrication and in the operation and management of the nanofabrication facility. This includes maintaining procedures for the safe and effective operation of the tools by users, working to ensure that the facility effectively supports the research of Watson College faculty, staff, and students, submitting research proposals independently and in collaboration with other faculty members to update the facility's capabilities, teaching courses, developing curricula, developing micro credentials and continuing professional education classes, identifying and pursuing new funding opportunities, providing user training, executing a strategic vision for the facility and ensuring its reliable operation.

The Associate/Full Professor - Energy Storage position will explore recent developments in energy storage and apply knowledge of systems modeling, operations optimization, integration with renewables, techno-economic analysis, sustainable materials, and recycling technologies to encourage economic growth and advance the adoption of clean and efficient energy solutions to build a more resilient and sustainable future.

The Associate/Full Professor - Energy Systems and Policy position will explore recent developments in evolving electricity markets. The outcomes of their research will help inform the design and implementation of robust energy systems, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply, even amidst the escalating challenges posed by climate change. Furthermore, their work will drive advancements in technological innovation, behavior change strategies, and policy frameworks, facilitating the transition towards sustainable, electrified, and energy-efficient residential systems with shared aims of mitigating carbon emissions while enhancing energy affordability, occupant comfort, and overall residential system resilience.

The Associate/Full Professor – Flexible, Additive and Hybrid Electronic Systems position will bring additional focus on electronics for edge computing and internet-of-things (IOT). The successful applicant will contribute to the advancement of materials, design, processes, tooling, additive fabrication and reliability testing in this critical area.

The Associate/Full Professor – Systems Engineering in Electronics and Semiconductor Manufacturing position will help bridge the gap between semiconductor and more traditional electronics manufacturing by leveraging new opportunities. These efforts should include a true systems engineering perspective of the structure, design options, and applications of the chiplet concept and 3D stacking, as well as the actual manufacturing technologies and processes involved, and of course human factors and work force development.

Qualified applicants in other emerging areas of systems science and industrial engineering, such as autonomous systems, advanced/smart manufacturing, cyber-physical systems, and machine learning and artificial intelligence, may be considered.

All positions involve establishing externally funded theoretical and applied research in the respective disciplines and teaching at all levels (undergraduate courses through advanced graduate courses).

The ideal candidates must have (i) an earned doctorate in industrial engineering, systems science, or other related disciplines, (ii) excellent leadership skills, and (iii) superb records of research, including garnering funding and scholarly publications. Teaching experience is preferred.

The department currently has thirty-three (33) faculty members and offers a BS degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) and MS and PhD Degrees in both Systems Science (SS) and Industrial and Systems Engineering (or ISE). Attracting $8.5-12 million annually in research funding from 2020-2023, our established faculty works collaboratively with over 30 sponsors from industry and federal agencies. SSIE also offers a cutting-edge executive health systems program in Manhattan. With about 250 undergraduate, 200 masters, and 200 doctoral students, the department is growing in numbers and in reputation.
