Research Opportunities
Psychology research lab positions: Design and run experiments concerning memory, interpret data, prepare publications
Description:
Our laboratory studies basic (i.e., simple) learning and memory with a focus on how forgetting can be decreased and increased as desired. We are currently accepting applications for positions as undergraduate research assistants. The research is done by examining the behavior of human subjects in a campus laboratory setting and on the internet. Much of our work is done in collaboration with researchers in France, England, and at other American universities. New undergraduate research assistants first receive about a month of orientation. They then assist advanced students for some months, and finally, students choosing to do so, conduct their own experiments. In addition to conducting research, students attend weekly lab meetings and biweekly paper discussion sessions. Students gain research experience including experimental design and data analysis, knowledge concerning basic cognition, and a source of detailed, personalized letters of recommendation. Some undergraduate assistants earn authorships on published papers and professional conference presentations. Students sometimes also sign up to receive course credit. Our undergraduate research assistants usually go on to graduate school in some aspect of psychology or the health sciences. A commitment of at least 11 hours/week for four semesters is expected; almost all students who enter the lab stay on until they graduate. Working in our laboratory calls for a large investment in time and effort, but our undergraduate assistants ordinarily receive a large return on their investment in terms of training and career advancement. We are looking for applicants who are sophomores (sometimes freshmen), have a GPA of at least 3.5, and want to start in the lab at the beginning of their junior (or sophomore) year in August.
