Economic Research Assistant - Programming, Data Analysis & Paper Writing

Description:

I am looking for a current undergraduate student (in Harpur, Watson or SOM) with strong quantitative background. The student will assist with data analyses and literature reviews and will provide general research support for my ongoing research projects.

My research project areas span topics related to labor, education, finance and health. Mostly focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East and South Asia. A more detailed description on my ongoing and completed projects is available at: http://users.nber.org/~nikolovp/research.html.

Position Requirements: Excellent writing skills, previous background in statistical analysis and exposure to programming (e.g., SAS, Stata or R). Undergraduate GPA while at Binghamton of at least 3.0. Other pluses: ability to work independently with minimal supervision; attention to detail; strong performance in quantitative courses; ability to write clearly. Prior exposure to econometrics is extremely helpful but not a requirement.

Preference will be given to candidates who have strong economics background and who aim to broaden their research experience before pursuing graduate studies in a social science discipline. Time commitment will average 5-10 hours a week for several months. To apply, please email pnikolov@binghamton.edu the following materials into a single PDF document named “Lastname_Firstname”: (1) a short 1-page letter discussing why you are interested in being a research assistant, a brief statement outlining your prior research experience (if any), your performance in statistics/economics/mathematics classes, and your familiarity with programming languages (if any); (2) an updated copy of your resume; (3) an unofficial copy of your undergraduate transcript, (4) a 5-page writing sample (preferably from a social science class assignment).
