Lab research assistant

Research in the Musselman Lab focuses on obesity and its associated pathological consequences using a Drosophila melanogaster animal model. Feeding these flies a high-sugar diet leads to insulin resistance and other symptoms of type 2 diabetes. High-sugar-fed flies exhibit hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, reduced longevity, cardiovascular disease and increased susceptibility to infection. Using simple biochemical assays and genetic tools, we study the mechanisms by which overnutrition reduces fitness. Projects entail preparation of fly diets, fly husbandry, fine dissection, fly physiology, and biochemistry. Undergrads are expected to commit to the lab for 4 semesters and to register for 4 credits/semester.
