Student Shop

The Shop is available to students for course-related work. If you're considering using the shop, review what we have here prior to the start of your project to ensure you'll have the right tools for your design, planning and fabrication.

State law requires that eye protection must be worn at all times in the student and wood shops. All hazardous chemicals and flammable materials are not allowed anywhere in the Student Shop.

First floor of the Engineering Building in room B2

Hours:

Monday - Friday During Academic Year - 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Summer/Breaks - 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Special open hours may be in effect at certain times and will be posted on Shop door.

Operation Rules and Procedures

Safety

  • New York State law requires that eye protection MUST be worn at all times.
  • New York State law requires that all woodworking MUST be done only in the area designated as the Woodshop.
  • Students are not allowed to work alone in the Student and Wood Shops.
  • Any and all hazardous chemicals and all flammable materials are not allowed in the Student Shop and Wood Shop.

First aid kit

  • One kit is located in the center of the shop on the side of the fire hose cabinet.
  • A second kit is located on the side of the shelving unit next to the safety equipment cabinet.

Telephone
The wall phone is restricted to on-campus calls only. 

Emergency phone number
911. Campus phones ring-in to University Police.

Eating and drinking
By order of the Dean, eating and drinking are not allowed in the Student Shop.

Cleanup
Students must clean up their own work area. Clean-up begins one-half hour before closing time.

Personal property stored in the shop
The State of New York and/or the Watson School is not responsible for personal property stored in the shop. Students storing material in the shop do so at their own risk. Personal and course related items left in the shop longer than two weeks after the spring semester ends will be considered abandoned and disposed of, unless prior arrangements are made with the staff.

Service Request

If you're in need of assistance on a project fill out a Service Request Form in the Shop.

Send drawings, documents, and/or design files for your request to Vincent Brady at vbrady@binghamton.edu. Include your "Project Name" in the subject line of the email.

Equipment List

Lathes

  • LeBlonde Regal Engine Lathe. 15” swing, 30” inches maximum distance between centers. Digital readout and quick-change tool post.
  • Nardini Nodus Engine Lathe. 15” swing, 60” maximum distance between centers. Digital readout and quick-change tool post.
  • ACER 1340G Engine Lathe. 13” swing, 40” maximum distance between centers. Digital readout and quick-change tool post.

Milling machines

  • Lagun Republic FTV-2S vertical turret mill. 3HP variable speed head, R8 spindle. 10” by 50” table (10” by 34” of usable table space). Digital readout for X and Y axis.
  • Two each Acer 3VS vertical turret mill. 3HP variable speed head, R8 spindle. 9” by 42” table. Digital readout for X and Y axis.

Surface grinder

  • Powermatic 1275 manual surface grinder. 6” by 12” magnetic chuck, 7” by 1/2” wheel. This is a small machine suitable only for very light work.

Drill presses

  • Two each, Delta VS6 15” floor model variable speed drill press. Adjustable table, 1/2" maximum drill diameter.
  • Delta 11-990 12” table-top, step-head drill press. 3/8” maximum drill diameter.

Saws

  • Delta 20” variable-speed vertical band saw.
  • Jet 18” vertical band saw.
  • Keller #1 power hack saw. 5” maximum capacity.
  • ACM Model ACM-4 abrasive cut-off saw. 1” maximum capacity.
  • Dewalt Model DW872 Multi-cutter saw. 14” blade. 

Sanders

  • Powermatic Model 33-B belt sander. 6” by 48” belts.
  • Kalamazoo Model 2FSM belt sander. 2” by 48” belts.
  • Mead Model BMB belt sander. 1” by 42” belts.

Sheet Metal Equipment

  • Tennsmith Model 52 foot-powered squaring shear. 52” width capacity.
  • Condor Model B936 universal hand-powered brake.
  • Tennsmith Model 16-18 hand-powered metal notcher.
  • Roper Whitney #15 hand-powered horn punch.
  • Di-Acro 12 station, hand-powered turret punch press.
  • Condor Model R-612 hand-powered slip roll.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All of the sheet metal machines have the following capacities that MUST NOT BE EXCEEDED.

  • Mild steel -- 1/16” (.062”) maximum thickness
  • Aluminum -- 3/32” (.093”) maximum thickness
  • Stainless steel – 1/32” (.032”) maximum thickness

Welding equipment

  • Marquette Model 10-128 electric arc welder. 3/16” maximum welding rod diameter.
  • Marquette Model 20-110 oxygen/acetylene cutting torch.
  • Marquette Model 20-100 oxygen/acetylene welding torch set.

Drills

  • Several complete sets of Fractional, Letter and Number drills are located in the shop. Metric drills are not available.

Tap and die sets

  • Hole saws ranging from 1 1/2” to 4”

Woodworking

All woodworking equipment is located in a separate room within the Student Shop. Due to New York State fire and safety laws, no woodworking is allowed in the metalworking area of the Student Shop.
