Blanket General Education Requests
There are instances where every course in a rubric will meet the SLOs for a Gen Ed whenever they are taught, usually due to disciplinary norms of content and instruction. For these courses, we allow departments to apply for a blanket Gen Ed designation. Blanket Gen Eds can be requested for an entire rubric set (e.g. all PLSC courses), or courses in a specific number range (e.g. all ENG 370a-z topics courses).
If you would like to request blanket Gen Eds for courses in your department, please read the following policy carefully, and reach out to Undergrad Education if you have questions.
Blanket Gen Ed Policy
Categories that can receive blanket approvals: H, N, L, T, I, M, A, Y, S
Categories that can not receive blanket approvals: WL, V, O, D, USD, GL
Categories with limited blanket options: C*
Categories with specific regulations, such as the percent of grade, class size, or learning outcomes that do not easily fit into multiple classes without oversight, are excluded from blanket approvals.
Proposal Process
Submit the following by email to the UUCC Chair, General Education, and Paul Gorelik:
- A written statement on how each class included in the proposed blanket will meet each required learning outcome and continue to do so.
- A signed document from current instructors and/or department leadership agreeing that instructors will participate in all required assessment activities.
Probation Period
- Awarded blankets will have a probationary period of two academic years.
- If the courses in the blanket fall below 80% assessment compliance rates, the blanket will be removed and the department can not reapply for any department blankets for two years.
Review
Blankets will be reviewed every five years. A report on assessment compliance will be sent to department leadership, and a reconfirmation that the courses will still meet the SLOs will be required.
Note:
*Due to the requirements for class size for C, only upper-level courses that fall in line with the 25 capacity maximum can apply for the blanket C.
