George Nunez ’18 says his Binghamton University experience shaped his approach to business, finance, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
The Finance Society and stock pitch competitions taught him how to research companies, develop an investment thesis, communicate complex ideas, defend his recommendations, and think critically under pressure.
He came away ready to solve a real problem: the lack of tech access in the Bronx.
Nunez founded Bronx Tech Hub, a community organization building the future workforce in the Bronx and across the city by creating pathways into technology, AI, STEM, climate tech, and entrepreneurship.
In the past year alone, Bronx Tech Hub has served more than 1,200 people through workforce development programming, fellowships, workshops, and events, all of which connect participants to employment and internship opportunities.
Building these pathways from the ground up was a challenge. At the outset, Nunez was doing it all: developing programs, building partnerships, raising funds, and recruiting participants.
“There were plenty of moments when the vision was bigger than the resources we had available,” he said. “What kept me going was seeing the response from the community and realizing that the need was real. Every successful program and partnership became proof that Bronx Tech Hub could grow into something much larger.”
The next phase for this venture is investing further in AI and emerging technology workforce programs, building stronger pipelines that lead clients directly to jobs and internships, helping more small businesses to adopt AI, and expanding entrepreneurship opportunities.
“Long term, my vision is for Bronx Tech Hub to become a permanent technology and innovation institution in the Bronx and a model that can eventually be replicated in other communities.
“I grew up in the Bronx, so when I work with a young person trying to figure out their career or someone seeking access to an industry they have never been exposed to, I can see parts of my own journey in theirs. There is incredible talent, creativity, and ambition in the Bronx. Being able to come back and help create opportunities in the community that raised me is one of the most meaningful parts of this work. Success for me is helping create pathways so more people from the Bronx can succeed, too.”
