SUNY Workplace Flexibility - Telecommuting
Reapplication Requirement for Workplace Flexibility (Telecommuting) Program
The SUNY Workplace Flexibility Policy (Telecommuting) program has been extended for all bargaining units and M/C employees through 2026-27. Many telecommuting arrangements have not been reviewed or updated since the original implementation of this program. With the renewal of the Telecommuting program, it is essential that all employees review the policy and file an updated Telecommuting Program Application and Work Plan should they wish to continue to continue to participate in the program. This year, eligibility to participate in the telecommuting program will reset on October 1, 2026 and run through August 31, 2027. Those wishing to continue to participate in the program beyond September 30, 2026 must apply this month, September 2026.
In subsequent years, employees who wish to continue participating in the program must submit an application each year. The approval period will run through August 31 of each year and the annual reapplication period will be the month of July. Supervisors will review requests and determine whether the arrangement remains appropriate based on operational needs, job responsibilities, performance, and departmental requirements. Please note that there is now a “summer only” request. We anticipate the open period for summer only telecommuting requests will be during the month of March. Please do not submit summer only requests at this point in time.
The University values workplace flexibility when it supports both employee effectiveness and institutional needs. However, remote work remains a privilege, not an entitlement, and is only appropriate for certain positions and job functions. An individual’s participation in the telecommuting arrangement can be modified, suspended, or cancelled at any time by management with 30 calendar days advance written notice to the employee where feasible and consistent with operational needs.
Employees and supervisors are reminded that remote work arrangements:
- All facets of customer service to the university community must be fully maintained with any telecommuting arrangement.
- The arrangement should not necessitate the transfer of work which increases the workload to co-workers on campus.
- May only be utilized for a maximum of 50% of an employee’s work hours.
- Generally, cannot begin before 6 months of service have been completed.
- Are not intended to serve as a substitute for child care or dependent care responsibilities or sick leave accruals.
Failure to submit an updated Telecommuting Program Application will result in the loss of telecommuting privileges. The application form and further information can be found below.
