  • Professor Hiroki Sayama was awarded Best Paper of the Decade for 2003-13 from the International Society of Artificial Life (ISAL) for his paper “Swarm Chemistry,” which was published in Artificial Life, Volume 15, in winter 2009.
  • SSIE reached a department record $5.8 million in committed research funds for the 2017-18 fiscal year. This is due in large part to the continued growth in the number faculty in the department and the work of those in the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence (WISE), an institute of advanced studies which is now in its 30th year. The department is also planning to hire four new assistant professors and one endowed professorship for the 2019-20 academic year.
  • Kasey Hill, who graduated in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering, received the AVANGRID Scholarship for Master’s Studies in the United States. It is a prestigious award, originally established by the Avangrid Foundation, given to only 10 students. This year, four of the students are from Binghamton University.
  • Adjunct Lecturer and Director of Performance Improvements at UHS Srikanth Poranki received the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching.
  • Watson Continuing Education at Binghamton University and IBM hosted a blockchain workshop on Oct. 10, 2018. The workshop was attended by more than 80 participants including students, faculty and industry members. Binghamton University’s Mohammad Khasawneh, chair and professor in the Systems Science and Industrial Engineering Department, said that the blockchain workshop provided valuable knowledge on this emerging field and helped to strengthen the partnership between Binghamton University and IBM.
  • Binghamton University hosted the national Society for Industrial and Systems Engineering Conference in early October, led by Professor Daryl L. Santos from the Systems Science and Industrial Engineering Department.
  • PhD student Lida Haghnegahdar was selected to participate at the 4th Annual STEM Faculty Launch Program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the SHPE Faculty Development Symposium, and the 2018 INFORMS doctoral student colloquium. She was also chosen to receive an ASSIST Travel Grant, enabling attendance at the ASSIST programming day at the AISES National Conference.
  • PhD student Jack Lombardi received the 2018 S3iP Distinguished Dissertation Award.
