Emergency fund provides grants to students
The Binghamton University Student Emergency Fund provides grants of financial assistance for currently enrolled Binghamton University students experiencing unusual and unforeseen financial demands that immediately threaten their academic progress and success, and for which there is no other source of reasonable remedy.
From April 9 through June 17, 2020, the Emergency Fund provided over $90,000 to students who found themselves managing financial crisis without the support they might normally have received from family or employment before COVID-19. Close to 95% of students who received funding were asking for help with rent. Vice President for Student Affairs Brian Rose worked closely with the Binghamton University Foundation Office to ensure the amount of money needed to meet the outpouring of applications for grants.
To manage the influx of Emergency Fund applications, the CARE Team supplemented efforts to provide case management services through the student application process with three additional staff members. One recipient expressed gratitude by writing: “Thank you so much for this financial aid. It couldn’t have come at a better time and I truly appreciate the support that the University and donors have extended to the students struggling with financial difficulties in these pandemic-stricken times.”
