Speech And Debate

Interested in competitive collegiate speech and debate?

Learn about our successful program, in which we have made champions out of competitors with no prior experience and further honed the skills of those who participated in high school. You can also debate for course credit through Binghamton, even if you attend a different university.

This site also features a variety of videos of speeches, debates and lectures. We also provide speech and debate tools, both for building skills and for using during competition. Lastly, from time to time, we host online competitions, in which you can compete and potentially win prizes. You can watch our first tournament, Binghamton University's 1st Annual Online Debate Tournament, and our second tournament, Binghamton University's 2nd Annual Online Debate Tournament, on this site for examples.

About

Binghamton Speech and Debate is the epitome of hard work and dedication. A fairly young program, Binghamton Speech and Debate members have worked diligently to make the team one of the top squads in the country. The team is composed of two sections that travel and compete in different activities at intercollegiate tournaments regionally and nationally.

The speech section focuses on the various arts of speech, including prose and poetry, extemporaneous speaking, and humorous interpretation, and additionally competes in their own unique form of debate.

The debate section competes in policy tournaments around the country, and Binghamton debate is consistently one of the top-ranked programs in the nation. Policy debaters compete at three different levels: Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. The team works collectively with members of all experience levels in order to prepare them for competitions and to help them build the skills and confidence necessary to become great public speakers.

Binghamton Speech and Debate, while always happy to have former high school competitors, requires no prior experience and invites all students interested in either speech or debate to join. Our coaching staff and student leadership are always eager to help new novices build the skills they need to win, even in the top divisions. For some testimonials, learn about our alumni.
