This year's excavations will be at the prehistoric Athens/Sayre site in Pennsylvania.
Participants will join professional archaeologists in ongoing research and archaeological
investigations at the Site, located along the Susquehanna River near its confluence
with the Chemung River in Bradford County, PA (about 40 miles southwest of campus).
The site has multiple time periods ranging from hunter-gatherer camps (c. 2500-1000
B.C.) to an agricultural community (c. A.D. 1000-1300). Previous excavations have
discovered a diversity of lithics (projectile points, tools, rough stone, fire-cracked
rock) and pottery. Storage/refuse pits and hearths are also an expected part of the
community patterning at the site. Based on the data and research potential from past
excavations, the site has been declared eligible for the State and National Registers
of Historic Places.
