The Department of Public Administration and Policy is focused on helping students develop in-demand, marketable skills for rewarding careers in public, nonprofit organizations and the private sector.

In the MPA program our mission is to enhance the commitment and capacity of our students to be effective public service leaders, who are equipped to:

  • make evidence‐based decisions;
  • recognize and rectify inequities;
  • promote inclusive institutions;
  • embrace democratic processes;
  • adapt to changing circumstances; and
  • model high ethical standards.

In the MPP program students develop globally marketable skills applicable to real-world international settings, equipping them with the following skills :

  • practical data analysis;

  • policy analysis;

  • modeling;

  • a globalized understanding;

  • and the theoretical framework to tackle today's most challenging policy issues

Sustainable Communities (MS) students develop an intellectual and experiential understanding of sustainability and its three pillars.  We teach them how to:

  • communicate effectively about sustainability to different audiences and for different purposes
  • understand the ethical implications of sustainability practices from diverse cultural, political and social perspectives
  • apply and assess sustainability policies in various settings
  • translate community needs into meaningful policy solutions

  • Master of Public Administration (MPA)

    Binghamton University’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) is a marketable professional degree that prepares students for management careers in government and nonprofit organizations.

    Our graduates:

    • Are leaders in public service
    • Think critically, creatively and ethically
    • Possess the analytical and technical skills needed to be creative problem-solvers
    • Readily adapt to changing political and social environments
    • Are actively involved in professional and community service

    Our classes

    We take great pride in our small in-person classes that encourage students to engage with each other and our expert faculty.

    We also offer courses online or in hybrid formats.

    What can you do with your degree?

    An MPA is a marketable professional degree that prepares students for management careers in public and nonprofit organizations. It is ideal for students who are committed to public service, would like to be leaders in public and nonprofit organizations, and want to make a positive difference in the world.  As organizations reshape, restructure, and respond to shifts in economic, demographic, and social realities, public servants must be trained as problem solvers. Opportunities abound for those able to think critically, creatively, and ethically. With a variety of roles to fill in every city and state, MPA students are attractive hires for positions that allow them to make positive change. Graduates can also compete for business and other private-sector openings that require management and financial analysis experience.

  • Master of Public Policy (MPP)

    Our one year, exclusively online, Master of Public Policy (MPP) program is designed for students committed to addressing public policy challenges and developing sustainable solutions. 

    Our emphasis on strong analytical skills, effective global communication and comprehensive policy knowledge prepares students for rewarding careers.

    Our classes

    Our courses are offered entirely online and asynchronously, allowing flexibility in location and schedules. 

    With excellent academics, experienced faculty, global perspectives, and access to a policy laboratory, students can expect a strong return on their educational investment.

    What can you do with your degree?

    The MPP degree provides the in-demand skills and knowledge sought by local, state, national, and international agencies, preparing students for the global job market. 

  • Sustainable Communities (MS)

    Our flexible two-year Master of Science (MS) in Sustainable Communities program is ideal for students committed to making the world a more livable place.

    By focusing on the three pillars of sustainability — environmental protection, economic vitality and social equity — our students gain the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to think holistically and become leaders in the field.   

    Our program’s rigorous academics, emphasis on social justice, dedicated faculty, and affordable tuition ensure students receive a great return on their educational investment.

    We take great pride in our smaller in-person classes, that encourage students to engage with each other, other cohorts, and our expert faculty.

    The program is interdisciplinary and customizable, as you can take classes outside of the department that align with your interests including, but not limited to coursework in public administration, geography, biology, anthropology, and environmental studies.

    With its integration of the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, our program expands our students’ job opportunities.
