Binghamton University Hazing Policy and Procedure

  • Pi Kappa Alpha - April 2025

    Date of hazing incident: April 6 and 8, 2025

    Type of resolution: Student Conduct Board Hearing and Appeal

    Date of resolution: July 22, 2025 (date appeal was answered)

    Policy violation

    • Rule 15 - Hazing
    • Rule 9 - Endangering, threatening, causing or attempting to cause physical harm to any person or causing reasonable apprehension of such harm
    • Rule 21 - Providing false or misleading information, including false identification, to the University or any University official.

    Abuse/illegal use of alcohol or drugs: No

    Sanction: Organizational suspension to conclude on May 31, 2027. Pi Kappa Alpha has since had recognition fully revoked for violation of the suspension.

    Incident description: The fraternity was found to have required new members to perform calisthenics in the early morning hours of April 6 and 8. Audio evidence was provided of call and response chants verifying the activities and the involvement of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, as well as the participation of the new member class. These activities occurred over a month after the fraternity had claimed to have completed the new member program and initiated the class.

    Date of resolution: Nov. 12, 2025

    Policy violation: Rule 15 - Hazing

    Abuse/illegal use of alcohol or drugs: No

    Sanction: Organizational Disciplinary Probation to conclude on May 31, 2026, and additional educational sanctions from national organization. Individual charges also issued.

    Incident description: The fraternity incorrectly carried out an approved national new member ceremony. The mistakes made in the ceremony allowed it to be interrupted by a member who behaved in a manner designed to degrade the new member class and create a sense of fear in the participants.

Information will remain on the report for five years.
