The Mediating Effects of Body Image and Self-Esteem on Relationship Satisfaction: The Role of Partner Commentary and Sexual Satisfaction

This week we highlight an amazing undergraduate researcher, Margarita Ashkinazi, a psychology student in her senior year. Through the Summer Scholars Program, Ashkinazi, was able to fund her research on the effects of body image on satisfaction in modern relationships.

The program offered her the opportunity to direct her own research, which she liked because, “Most of what we do in college and on campus is just follow the instructions of someone else, and we don’t always understand why we’re doing what we’re doing, we’re just blindly following directions, so now I was able to fill out every step on my own and understand the importance of it.” Her ongoing study aims to sample 145 heterosexual couples, collecting information about details such as levels of couple satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, body esteem, and types of partner commentary on physical appearance.

According to Ashkinazi, she has found a positive correlation between between body esteem and relationship satisfaction and between sexual satisfaction and relationship satisfaction. Her study suggests that the kinds of comments partners make to each other greatly influence their contentment in the relationship. The study aims to draw a conclusion regarding the position of sexual satisfaction as the bridge between body self esteem and relationship satisfaction.
