The raising of the clock tower

On December 13, 2000, construction crews raised the 75-foot clock tower a top the new University Union addition. The tower is expected to serve as a centerpiece for the addition and as a new campus landmark. Continuing work on the Union and the new clock tower can be viewed through the webcam on the University’s construction page.

The tower features two large clocks (each 9 feet 6 inches in diameter) facing on the north and west sides.
As construction crews look on, a 130-ton crane begins lifting the 34,000 pound clock tower.
Workers watch as the tower is hoisted to the top of the 65-foot brick base. Additional electrical work is needed before the clocks become operationl. Eventually the clocks will be lit at night.
