C - Composition
Required Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Students will:
- research a topic, develop an argument, and organize supporting details.
- demonstrate coherent college-level communication (written) that informs, persuades, or otherwise engages with an audience.
- demonstrate the ability to revise and improve written communication.
Requirements and Guidelines
- Total Formal Writing:
- At least 20 pages (~5,000 words), accounting for 50% or more of the final grade.
- Revision Requirement:
- One 5+ page paper must undergo substantial revision based on instructor feedback (not just peer review).
- Formal vs. Informal Writing:
- Formal writing (counted toward 20 pages): Research papers, analytical essays, argumentative essays.
- Informal writing (not counted): Free-writing, discussion posts, journals, fiction, blogs.
- No Double Counting:
- Only the final version of a paper counts toward the 20-page requirement (drafts/rewrites excluded).
- Class Size & Group Work:
- Cap: 25 students (exceptions possible with approval).
- Group papers only count if each student’s contribution is individually assessed and meets length requirements.
- C courses can be 2 credits.

O - Oral Communication
Required Student Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- demonstrate coherent college-level communication (oral) that informs, persuades, or otherwise engages with an audience.
- evaluate communication for substance, bias, and intended effect.
- demonstrate the ability to revise and improve oral communication.
Requirements and Guidelines
- Number of Presentations:
- In-person/hybrid courses: Two live presentations.
- Online courses: One live/video presentation + one recorded presentation.
- Class Size:
- Cap of 25 students (exceptions with approval).
- Listening & Critique Component:
- Students must critique peer presentations using structured criteria (such as an instructor-provided rubric).
- Feedback should focus on improvement (not just evaluation).
- O courses can be 2 credits.

J - Joint Composition + Oral Communication
The J gen ed is assigned automatically if you are approved for both a C and O gen ed. A course with a J gen ed must meet all of the above SLOs and requirements for both the C and O.
