Who is eligible to apply for funding for this initiative?
Faculty members engaging in research outside of the United States are encouraged to
apply. The site of the research must be an international setting.
Do funds from this initiative cover faculty expenses?
No. Faculty are expected to utilize other funding sources to cover the costs of their
travel. The money for this initiative covers undergraduate students only.
May students engage in their own research while assisting with my project
The internship opportunity is for undergraduate students to work under the mentorship
of a faculty member in an international setting. So, it is not acceptable for the
student to be working independently on their own research.
What are my responsibilities as a faculty mentor?
Faculty members are responsible for both the development of their intern(s) research
skills and the health and safety of all undergraduate students who accompany the faculty
member on the research trip. Faculty are expected to accompany their intern(s) for
the entire duration of the time abroad. They should identify all possible expenses
an undergraduate student may incur while traveling to the overseas research site,
including but not limited to refundable airfare, lodging, meals, transportation, and
outbound health insurance and include these figures in the application.
Am I required to provide the name(s) of the intern(s) at the time of application?
Although the application provides a space to enter undergraduate student names, it is not a required field.
However, we highly recommend doing so.
How do I identify the cost of outbound health insurance for my intern(s)?
What type of flight should undergraduate interns book as a part of this initiative?
Undergraduate students who receive funding as part of this initiative are required to book refundable airfare that permits a change in date, should any unanticipated
itinerary changes arise. Faculty should account for the cost of such a flight within
the budget portion of the application.
Aside from the application, are there any other requirements before travel occurs?
Awardees are subject to any college/school-specific requirements that the college/school
requires of faculty travelers.
