What is Interprofessional Education

The World Health Organization defines interprofessional education (IPE) as collaborative learning experiences where students from two or more different health professions learn with, from, and about each other, with the goal of improving teamwork and patient care.

At Binghamton University, interprofessional education is dedicated to preparing students from diverse professional backgrounds to collaborate effectively in delivering person-centered, equitable care. Rooted in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Core Competencies, our program supports emphasizes the domains:

  1. Values and Ethics for Interprofessional Practice
Fostering a climate of mutual respect and shared values among professionals to ensure ethical and patient-centered care.
  2. Roles and Responsibilities
Encouraging understanding of one's own role and those of other professions to effectively address health care needs and improve health outcomes.
  3. Interprofessional Communication
Promoting responsive and responsible communication with patients, families, and professionals to support a team-based approach to health care.
  4. Teams and Teamwork
Applying principles of team dynamics to perform effectively in various team roles, ensuring safe, timely, and efficient care delivery.
