What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course developed by the National Council for Mental Well-being that is offered by Binghamton University through support of B-Healthy, Healthy Campus Initiative. The training teaches how to support others in a mental health challenge or crisis. Trainees learn how to recognize, understand and respond to signs of mental health challenges and offer the first level of support. Courses are available to students, staff and faculty free of charge.
Why is it important?
More than one in five adults (23.1%) suffer from mental health challenges or mental health crises every year. Binghamton University offers Mental Health First Aid training because it’s vital to support our campus community. MHFA training helps remove the fear and worry from talking about mental health. When more people know how to begin these conversations, more people can get the help they need.
