Presentation Requests

 Please fill out and submit the form below to request a presentation for your staff, class, organization, campus club or special event that you will be hosting. Your request will be forwarded to our staff and a specific presenter will be in touch to discuss the details of your request.

Please note, should your program request fall during a similar time of a program already on the Student Employment programs and events calendar or we can not honor your request, we may explore co-sponsorship of that program.

For your requested program, please provide at a minimum one week advance notice and detail any special requests in the "Comments" section. If you have any questions please email stemploy@binghamton.edu to request information about the status of your presentation request.

Technology is changing our world. It has broken down barriers and unleashed opportunities like never before. It has also transformed our economy, redefining the skills needed to succeed. Digital literacy skills can help you bridge the digital skills gap – the divide between the digital skills needed for a job and the skills employees possess.

In partnership with Grovo, Capital One has developed a free and open digital literacy course that gives everyone access to the digital skills needed for today's middle-skill roles – jobs that don't require a bachelor's degree, but pay above the national living wage.

Lynda.com, a LinkedIn company, is an online educational site that includes more than 5,700 courses (and 180,000+ videos) in popular fields like web design, web development, IT, education/instruction, media production and business. This resource is helpful to prospective student employees as well as current student employees who want to develop professional skills in IT, EQ, CAD, video, animation, audio and music, MS Suite, Quickbooks, Google Analytics, entrepreneurial skills, graphic design, software languages, marketing and web design.

Lynda.com requires a NYC Public Library (NYPL) card to access. If you have a NYPL card, you can simply login with the library card number and your library card pin.

If you do not have one of these cards, you can visit the NYPL website and apply for one online following these steps:

    If you do not live in New York City or New York State, but you do work or go to school in New York City or New York State, then you qualify for this application type. After you apply online, pick up your card in person at an NYPL location in the Bronx, Manhattan, or Staten Island OR email your valid identification to patronaccounts@nypl.org, or fax it to (212) 621-0278. Your card will be mailed to you within 10-25 days.

    Any 2 of the following forms of identification are acceptable, provided one shows a photo and name and/or signature and the other the applicant's
    current address:

    • Current college or university photo ID card
    • Current Armed Services ID card
    • Alien Registration photo ID card
    • Matricula Consular (Mexican CID)
    • Current passport
    • Social Security card
    • Birth certificate
    • New York State motor vehicle registration
    • Current rent bill or lease agreement
    • Transit pass
    • Current photo ID with signature and expiration date issued by an embassy or consulate in New York
    • Cable, phone or utility bill
    • Any piece of mail delivered by the US Post Office
  • New York City/New York State Residents

    If you are in the NYC area, you can pick up your card in person at an NYPL location in the Bronx, Manhattan, or Staten Island. If you would like it mailed to you, e-mail your valid identification to patronaccounts@nypl.org, or fax it to (212) 621-0278. Your card will be mailed to you within 10-25 days.

    Only one piece of valid identification is needed if it is 1 of the following valid New York State or City IDs:

    • Current driver's license
    • Current photo learner's permit
    • Current non-driver's identification (includes IDNYC)

Exploring Emerging Technologies Coursera Certification

This project consists of two parts:

  1. #EmTechMOOC, hosted in Coursera, provides a supportive environment for dialogue and sharing among participants.
  2. EmTechWIKI: a socially-curated discovery engine for exploring technology tools, tutorials, and resources.

Develop a personal ePortfolio to showcase your skills and accomplishments,
and earn digital badges and a Coursera Certificate of Completion.

Online training for GSEU-represented graduate student employees

Empire Knowledgebank (EKB) is a resource provided to GSEU employees by New York state to complete training as a benefit of membership in the union. Access thousands of eLearning courses, eBooks and short-course videos for opportunities to enhance your professional and career development, and for certification preparation and continuing education in a variety of areas. To apply to access this content, staff must complete an application, which is available on the website. This program is available through March 31, 2019.

Ways to be more marketable

Earn Excel certification

Advanced Technology Training and Information Networking (ATTAIN) is a statewide technology-based employment initiative funded by the New York State Legislature. ATTAIN offers free certifications for Microsoft Office (especially Excel). Training is offered monthly in downtown Binghamton and students can add this certification to their résumés. This is a great opportunity for those who prefer in-person learning.

Gain experience

Through community service: Some students may need to enhance their marketability by developing skills and experience through community service. Binghamton’s Center for Civic Engagement’s Service Opportunity Database showcases available opportunities in our local area and the diversity of organizations that offer them. Students are encouraged to gain experience for part-time jobs through service.

Through research opportunities: Unpaid research opportunities are wonderful ways to gain experience and skills to prepare to apply to funded roles in the future. Students can visit the Undergraduate Research Center’s CROP database to find research opportunities at Binghamton.

Through student organizations: Student organizations have many opportunities to develop the skills employers are looking for in their next employee. Students can explore Binghamton University student organizations on B-Engaged: Organizations to find out what organizations they may wish to join.

Student Employee Appreciation Day

This is an annual event led by the President's Office and co-sponsored by the Fleishman Center and Student Employment Office.  This event occurs every year in late Spring and recognizes the contributions and hard work of our student employees on campus.

This year's event will occur on Thursday, May 9th, 2019 from 1:30 to 3:30pm in the Mandela Room and Old Union Hall.
