Promise Scholars Initiative

The Promise Scholars Initiative envisions a Binghamton University where potential is recognized early and supported intentionally, especially for students facing barriers to success. Through deep collaboration across campus and community, we foster a culture of connection, care and belonging so that no student is left to figure it out alone.

We provide strengths-based, identity-conscious support to address opportunity gaps early. From the first year through graduation, we help students build the confidence, resources and community needed to succeed at Binghamton and beyond.

Why Promise Scholars?

National research and Binghamton’s own institutional data show that while many students persist through their first year, retention often declines during the second year as academic expectations increase and structured support fades.

For students from historically underserved backgrounds, this period can become a critical turning point. Promise Scholars is designed to meet students at multiple points along their journey, with layered support that addresses both long-term development and immediate needs.

Who We Serve

Promise Scholars supports students who show promise and persistence but may be navigating college without strong institutional ties.

We center the experiences of students who are:

  • First-generation college students
  • Low-income or financially vulnerable
  • From rural or underrepresented geographic regions
  • Nontraditional or transfer students

Students seeking a stronger sense of belonging and connection are encouraged to complete a Connection Card for more information. Additionally, faculty, staff, community and family members may submit a referral on behalf of a student.

Selection is holistic and considers academic standing, access to resources and our ability to help the student based on their individual needs.

The Promise Scholars Initiative is an umbrella framework comprising complementary programs that ensure students receive the right support at the right time. Passport to Promise is the signature cohort-based experience of the Promise Scholars Initiative, while Pathways is a semester-based, opt-in support option for students at any point in their undergraduate journey.
