He holds a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Oregon, a master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa, and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from UCLA. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society and American Philosophical Society.
