When Ife was a student she studied Integrative Neuroscience and Africana Studies and she engaged in some life-changing experiences that brought her to the life she leads today. In her career she is a Manager and Facilitator for the Partnership for Public Service. The Partnership for Public Service is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C. whose mission is to inspire a new generation of civil servants and to transform the way government works. Ife leads a full life outside of work as well. In service to her Nigerian roots, Ife’s passion for developing emerging leaders led her to partner with Children that Change the World (CTCTW) to design and deliver an innovation challenge for high school students in the Ogbomoso community, spotlighting the creative wealth of young Nigerians. She also serves as a board member of SprinNG, an organization building a community of young Nigerians in writing and literature, and has worked to expand its reach and impact. Attendees can expect to connect with Ife via zoom and engage in a Q&A after her talk.

Summer Course-based Research Opportunities:

  • More information

    Zoom Link: https://binghamton.zoom.us/j/94460415502

Today, students need to have research experience, so they can be competitive for NSF-REU, EXROP and other types of national research fellowships and subsequently for graduate school, medical school and so forth. Although our summer research programs are similar to a NSF-REU experience, it differs in that it provides a stepped, multi-mentored, team-based experience that is ideal for students with little, if any, research experience. Last year the summer research streams were Ecological Genetics, Biogeochemistry, and Clean Energy, with rising sophomores, juniors and seniors – all STEM majors with aspirations for medical school or graduate school but as yet no research experience. They completed a summer research project of publishable quality, and all demonstrated substantial personal and professional growth.

The SRI and FtRI programs are similar to the First-year Research Immersion (FRI). All of our programs provide undergraduates with training and experience conducting real research in research streams designed by faculty recognized around the world for their work on important problems. Both programs will take students step by step from learning to ask a research question to presenting their research to the public. Students will develop the knowledge and skills in these programs that will allow them to continue with advanced research after they complete the program.

For summer 2023, SRI will be running research in our Clean Energy (chemistry and physics) stream. Participants will spend the summer conducting research on these topics and gain valuable experience and knowledge. SRI will run for ten weeks and consist of two courses (Research Stream I & II courses, 8 credits total). Opportunities after this program include continued research in faculty laboratories, industry internships and national fellowships.

Additionally, we plan to run FtRI with our research streams yet to be determined. Participants will spend the first summer session conducting collaborative research. FtRI will run for 5 weeks during Summer Session 1 and consist of one course (Research Stream I course, 4 credits). Following successful completion of FtRI, student researchers will be enrolled in the fall FRI course (Research Stream II course, 4 credits) to complete the FRI program alongside current FRI students in the same research streams.

This live informational webinar will help answer your questions about these programs and give you a chance to ask about the application process and other questions you may have about our program logistics.

Guest speaker is Holly Flora, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Tulane University

Scholars have long recognized the importance of female lay readers to the development of the genre of the Book of Hours in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance in northern Europe. In Italian contexts, where Books of Hours are relatively rare, other texts became adapted for devotional use in illustrated manuscripts, reflecting an eclectic urban religious culture. A little-known illuminated manuscript of the Legenda maior made for an unnamed laywoman in Milan ca. 1350 (MS 411 at the Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome) is an example of this kind of adaptation.

In this paper, I will examine the way that MS 411 emphasizes the side wound of Christ or of Francis (which is of course Christ’s wound, also acquired via Francis’ stigmatization) as a focal point for the manuscript’s female reader. In MS 411’s highly personalized image cycle, the female devotee appears four times kneeling before either Christ or Francis, who expose their side wounds. The wound in Christ’s side, which can take on the appearance also of a vagina, is sometimes depicted on its own in Books of Hours; examples of the side wound as a singular devotional image occur in manuscripts made for lay women, such as in the Psalter-Hours of Bonne of Luxembourg in the Met Cloisters. I will argue that in MS 411, the privileging of the side wound as an object of the reader’s prayer was key to this manuscript’s re-imagining of the Legenda maior as a devotional text.
