Working After Retirement
You may return to work after retirement. However, certain retirement systems have annual earning limits. Your health, dental and vision may be affected as well.
- You should contact the hiring campus Benefits staff immediately if you plan to return to work at any New York State agency after retirement. If collecting a NYS pension (ERS, PAFRS or TRS) annual earning limits may apply if you are under age 65.
- If you are a rehired retiree and collecting from your SUNY ORP account, it is very important to notify Benefits.
- Be sure to notify the State agency that you retired from Binghamton University. If you return to work at BU, you must first be off of the payroll two full pay periods before rehire payment can occur.
- For Medicare purposes, you are considered a benefited state employee if you return to work at a regular schedule of 50% or more for six payroll periods or if teaching six or more credit hours per semester.
- NOTE: Medicare primary retirees and their Medicare primary dependents are not eligible for Medicare B reimbursement for the time period you return to work for NYS in a benefits eligible appointment
- Always inform your healthcare providers of changes in your Medicare status.
- The Retiree Services Program maintains a list of Binghamton University retirees who are interested in part-time work opportunities. If you would like to be included, please email Corinna Kruman with your name, email address, and availability.
