Summer Research Opportunities

Apply for a paid summer research opportunity with a faculty mentor in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SOPPS) or another discipline in the health sciences.

Three different opportunities are available:

  • Health Sciences Interdisciplinary Summer Research Fellowship
    • The research fellowship will be awarded to graduate or undergraduate students performing summer research within any field of health sciences. The intent is to have a student(s) from the SOPPS work with a faculty member from another discipline; or a faculty member from the SOPPS work with a student from another discipline. Faculty and students from the SOPPS, working together, may also collaborate across disciplines.
  • School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Summer Research Fellowship
  • School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Summer Research Fellowship for Women
    • For the SOPPS summer research fellowship and the fellowship for women opportunities, Binghamton University alumni donors have provided the SOPPS a gift to support summer stipends for pharmaceutical sciences and related translational research at Binghamton University.
    • Pharmacy students can choose a research faculty mentor in the SOPPS or any other Binghamton University faculty. Harpur College undergraduates must choose a research faculty mentor in the SOPPS.
    • Interdisciplinary projects that are collaborative with additional faculty members in the SOPPS and other Binghamton University schools are encouraged, but not necessary.

To apply

The application is a one- to two-page “Specific Aims” format, with the following sections:

  • Title of research project.
  • Student name, current degree program, anticipated graduation year.
  • Research mentor faculty name, school.
  • Significance. What is the background of the research question to be addressed? Why is this research problem significant in terms of public health and/or basic knowledge?
  • Experience. What is the experience of the student and the mentor that makes them equipped to answer this question? Is there preliminary data that this project will build upon?
  • Specific Aim. What is the research that will be carried out? How will it be done?
  • Deliverables. What are the anticipated results, and is there confidence that they can be carried out?
  • Impact. Assuming that the research works out as planned, what are the next steps? What possible impact will the results have on the ‘significance’ explained above?

Applications will be reviewed and awards made by April 1, 2023. It is anticipated that five awards will be made in 2023. A completed W-9 will be required from all award recipients.
