What if someone is not comfortable reporting sexual violence at the police station?

UPD recognizes that talking about personal experiences with sexual violence can be painful and seeks to address barriers victims might face by offering a number of options for reporting locations. An officer can come directly to a victim’s on-campus location; reports can also be taken at University support offices such as the VARCC and CARE Team.

Violence, Abuse and Rape Crisis Center (VARRC): Johnson Hall 3rd Floor - The University Police have a designated space at the VARCC, which is capable of completing a full interview, including audio and video recording equipment. The space also allows victim advocates and care team members to be in close proximity.

CARE Team office: University Union West 204 – The CARE Team office is an excellent location where the University Police can meet a victim of interpersonal violence. Additionally, the CARE Office houses many of the University's advocates who are available to guide and assist during the report.

What happens if a victim just wants the situation documented with police?

University Police will support a victim's decision on whether to pursue criminal charges. If a victim declines to pursue charges, an official report is still generated. The collection of physical and digital evidence is still encouraged. A victim can change their decision at any point and pursue criminal charges at a later date.

What if the concern happened outside of University Police jurisdiction?

If the incident happened outside University Police jurisdiction, such as in the City of Binghamton, University Police can assist the victim in reporting to the outside agency. A report will still be generated by the university police to document the incident. Regardless of the incident’s location, on-campus resources are always available.
