The guaranteed first-year transfer to any major in any school/college at Binghamton does not apply to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SOPPS) because students are not enrolled in SOPPS until the conclusion of their second year at the earliest. However, regardless of class year, Scholars in good standing who meet the pre-requisites for entry and apply before January 15th are guaranteed admission into the Pharmaceutical Sciences PharmD program. All SOPPS pre-requisites must be completed with a C- or better.
NOTE: Scholars entering the School of Pharmacy who intend to use their $3500 Scholars award must do so prior to becoming a new graduate student. The only exception to this is if the student intends to study abroad and receive transferable undergraduate credits towards the completion of their prerequisites prior to beginning their +4 years of study in SOPPS.
Special Considerations for PharmD Scholars:
PharmD Students Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree
SOPPS 3+4 students will typically receive a Bachelor's Degree at the end of their 4th year (of the 7 required). In order to graduate with honors, all Scholars Program requirements must be completed by the time the Bachelor's Degree is awarded.
PHARM 510 and any of the other Scholars III options may be used to satisfy the Scholars III requirement. All relevant applications must be submitted on B-Engaged.
PHARM 562 and any of the other Scholars IV options may be used to satisfy the Scholars IV requirement. All relevant applications must be submitted on B-Engaged.
Failure to submit these applications will result in the student graduating without honors.
PharmD Students NOT Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree
The Scholars minor will be omitted from the transcript upon matriculation in SOPPS as per university rules that graduate students may not pursue undergraduate programs. However, the student will remain enrolled in the Binghamton University Scholars Program. Scholars requirements will no longer appear in Degree Works but instead will be tracked by Scholars office staff and B-Engaged.
The PharmD degree will be awarded at end of year 6 or 7 (end of P4, Pharmacy Year 4), and relevant honors transcript notations will be applied at that time.
PHARM 510 and any of the other Scholars III options may be used to satisfy the Scholars III requirement. All relevant applications must be submitted on B-Engaged.
PHARM 595 and any of the other Scholars IV options may be used to satisfy the Scholars IV requirement. All relevant applications must be submitted on B-Engaged.
Failure to submit these applications will result in the student graduating without honors.
SOPPS Advising and Transferable Coursework
- Scholars applying to SOPPS must first meet with Christianna Friedrichsen, Admissions and Student Services Specialist.
- The PCAT exam is no longer required.
- SCHL127 Scholars Cornerstone Seminar fulfills the Social/Behavioral Science Pharmacy pre-requisite.
- Any Scholars course with a W, J, or C general education designation will meet the English I Pharmacy pre-requisite.
- A second Scholars course with a W, J, or C will meet the English II Pharmacy pre-requisite.
- Some SCHL280/281 courses will meet other Pharmacy pre-requisites depending on the course.
Other Pharmacy Graduate Programs
Scholars in good standing who meet the pre-requisites for entry and apply before January 15th are guaranteed admission into the Pharmaceutical Sciences MS program. Applicants to the PhD program who apply prior to December 15th will be given priority consideration (but are not guaranteed admission) provided they are in good standing and have taken the necessary pre-requisites. Applicants should mention in their personal statement that they are a member of the Binghamton University Scholars Program and also send an email to pharmsci@binghamton.edu once they have submitted their application.
Applying to SOPPS
Scholars who desire to be admitted to the MS or PhD programs, must apply through graduate admissions by January 15. Scholars are strongly encouraged to submit prior to December 15.
Scholars who desire to be admitted to the PharmD program, must apply via the PharmCAS application by January 15.
