If you are interested in transferring academic credit, we strongly advise you consult with an academic advisor.

Transfer Students Applying to SOM
If you are a new transfer student who applied to Binghamton as an accounting or business administration major, you will automatically be considered for admission to the major by the School of Management.
Current Binghamton Students
If you are a current Binghamton University student in a non-management major and wish to add or change your major to accounting or business administration, you must follow the guidelines for Intra-University transfer into the School of Management.
Transfer Credit Overview
The School of Management may award transfer credit for the following:
- Advanced Placement (AP), A-Level, or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams
- College-level courses taken while in high school
- Courses taken at a community college
- Courses taken at another college or university before enrolling at Binghamton
- Courses taken at another college or university while enrolled at Binghamton
- Approved testing-based credit
Exam-based Credits
While we do accept the following exam based credit, please note that the total credits that can be transferred from testing is 32 credits. If you earned credit from testing you cannot repeat the equivalent course at Binghamton and earn credit.
Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
AP courses transfer to Binghamton University upon submission of official scores from The College Board Educational Testing Services to the Binghamton University Admissions Office, provided a score of 3 or higher was received. View the AP Equivalency Guide and receive information on how to officially send score reports.
A-Levels Credit
Credit for A-Level exams may be awarded upon submission of official scores. Course equivalencies are available through this link along with information on how to submit scores
International Baccalaureate (IB) Courses
Students who have taken Higher Level(HL) IB courses while in high school are also eligible for transfer with scores of 4 or higher. These courses transfer to Binghamton University upon submission of official scores from the International Baccalaureate Organization. View the IB equivalency Guide and receive information on how to submit official scores.
Courses Taken at Another College or University
The following guidelines apply if you are transferring from another institution or completed college-level coursework prior to enrolling at Binghamton:
- All transfer credit must appear on an official transcript from a regionally accredited institution
- A grade of C or higher is required
- Remedial or pre-college courses will not transfer
- Students must complete at least 40 credits in residence at Binghamton to graduate
- At least 50% of all business/accounting credits must be completed at Binghamton University
AACSB Transfer Credit & Validation Policy
The School of Management follows transfer credit guidelines established by its accrediting body, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
If you completed a course at a NON-AACSB accredited institution at the lower-division level (100–200) and Binghamton offers the equivalent course at the upper-division level (300+), AACSB requires course validation.
Validation Process
- Validation is completed through a written examination administered by SOM
- If you pass the exam, the requirement is waived, but upper-level credit is not awarded
International and Study Abroad Students
When submitting transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States, please note that we may require an official copy of the transcript, translated into English if necessary, and an official course-by-course evaluation from WES or ECE. These evaluation reports should be sent directly to the Binghamton University Office of Admissions.
Please note that an evaluation from WES or ECE is not necessary in the following situations:
-
- coursework taken through a Binghamton University or SUNY study abroad program.
- coursework that is transcripted by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
- coursework transcripted by an international college or university with which Binghamton University has an articulation agreement and/or partnership with.
- coursework taught by a Binghamton University faculty member and transcripted by an accredited international college or university
Appealing Transfer Credit Evaluations
Students who are transferring courses to Binghamton and wish to appeal the transfer credit evaluation they received and/or course equivalencies awarded please submit The General Academic Petition.
Courses taken at other colleges/universities while enrolled at Binghamton
While at Binghamton, it is common for SOM students to take courses at other colleges to transfer to their program here, especially during summer and winter breaks.
- You must fill out Petition to take Courses at Another Institution.
- In general, you may transfer non-SOM courses and any lower level SOM courses from any college including community colleges. Advanced SOM courses (i.e. those numbered above 300) must be taken at other AACSB accredited business schools and you are limited in the number that can be taken elsewhere. See a listing of these schools.
- You can go to the Undergraduate Admissions transfer information webpage and select a college to view course transfer equivalencies, planning guides and transfer agreements.
- A good source for online courses is the Open SUNY website which lists online courses available SUNY wide. The site shows the online courses offered each semester by the various SUNY schools. You can search by term, school or courses. If you find a course you wish to take, get approval from the advisor.
