A message from the President on the Strategic Plan

Developing a new strategic plan to guide Binghamton’s continued success, outlined in these pages, was among the first priorities of my presidency. Since November 2025, more than 2,800 members of the Binghamton University community have come together to shape our shared future. The result is Forward Together: The Vision for Binghamton University, a strategic plan that reflects our collective aspirations and charts an ambitious path for the next five years.

As a new president, I have been drawn to Binghamton’s distinctive spirit — what I often refer to as The Binghamton Bond. It is a genuine sense of connection, care, and shared purpose that exists across our community. In part, this spirit is fostered by the University’s scale: large enough to achieve the ambitions of a major research institution, yet small enough to sustain meaningful, high-touch relationships across our community. It was my hope to develop a plan that honors this uniqueness and leverages Binghamton’s strengths toward a next level of institutional growth.

This work has been, from the outset, a collective endeavor. Strategic plan co-chairs Provost Donald Hall and Distinguished Professor Mohammad Khasawneh, along with 30 Strategic Planning Committee members, invited the University community to help shape our path forward — and the response was remarkable. Through the Listening to Lead Tour, I had the privilege of meeting more than 1,000 individuals — students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, friends, and community leaders — and hearing their reflections on what makes Binghamton exceptional. They shared both aspirations and challenges with candor and care. Nearly 2,000 more joined us throughout the spring 2026 semester through surveys, meetings, and forums as this plan began to take shape.

I am deeply grateful to all who contributed. Your insights have meaningfully formed this strategic plan, which is intended to consolidate our national leadership as a public university in five distinct goal areas:

  • Goal 1: Integrated research and creative activities for undergraduates
  • Goal 2: Transformative graduate education from enrollment to career
  • Goal 3: Fostering a University community of belonging, shared identity, and school spirit
  • Goal 4: Engaged research partnerships and creative collaborations advancing social and economic impact
  • Goal 5: Building bridges locally to globally to promote the common good

I am confident we can achieve this plan because of what I’ve heard since day one at Binghamton. Our University is building from a position of momentum and promise.

Our faculty and staff are exceptional; our students are intellectually curious, driven, and talented; and our more than 160,000 alumni serve as both exemplary role models and steadfast supporters of the University. Binghamton continues to earn national distinction, having been recognized as a Top 10 Public Ivy and a top 25 public university by Forbes, and applications for first-year admission continue to rise year after year. Our research and scholarship continue to expand, and the University has received distinction from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education for its commitment to research and community engagement. There is, quite simply, extraordinary momentum across this institution — and we must continue to build upon it.

I am grateful to my predecessor, Harvey Stenger, whose vision for the Road Map established a strong foundation for this next phase of institutional growth. What distinguishes Binghamton is the community’s shared commitment to shaping and advancing the University’s future. The years ahead will require sustained collaboration to build capacity toward a next level of effectiveness and impact. I am profoundly appreciative of your engagement, your ideas, and your willingness to work together in pursuit of our common goals.

I extend my sincere thanks to all who have contributed to the development of this plan. I am equally grateful for your continued partnership as we work to advance this great University over the next five years and beyond.
